LIVES OF THE POETS

At Lizzie Siddall's burial, her husband,
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, threw his poems
Into her open grave. Some time later
When he opened the grave to retrieve them
He was annoyed to discover that the poetry
Strewn on her corpse wasn't his. Worse than that,
It was quite good. For many years afterwards
Mrs. Arnold would wake up wondering
Why Matthew was chuckling in his sleep.
