ON A GREEN STEM

Flora picks one last flower -- a yellow one --
And leaves Pompeii behind. In 1908,
My grandmother will find it pressed
Between the pages of an old book.
She'll later describe it to Rose,
Her oldest child, who in turn
Will draw it -- left-handed -- for Nate
The very youngest. Nate will use the flower
As a character in stories he tells
To my older brother, but I listen too.
