FIGURES

One of the suitors, Glaucus, was fat,
Walked slowly, told good stories.
His long, clever hands carved
A soldier for Telemachus
From a stick of alder wood
Later, he made a dryad and a satyr
So the soldier would have friends.
For years after the suitors' deaths
The dryad regularly appeared
In Ithacan dreams. The soldier
Went with Telemachus to Clusium
And shared his tomb. The satyr
Meant to play an important role
In the boy's life, guiding and advising
But wound up in a different tale entirely.
